Shy 38 Inc. has partnered with AnimaLearn and United Poultry Concerns to bring you a complete curriculum that includes lesson plans, chick life cycle models, books and more at no cost to educators.
Hatching live chicks in schools is an outdated practice that's unethical and cruel.

We are home to over 70 previously abused, neglected, dumped or otherwise unwanted roosters.
Deliberately bringing more chickens into the world when there are already more homeless birds than there are available homes is unethical.
Classroom chick hatching doesn't teach children about the natural life cycle of chickens. Only mother hens should incubate eggs.
Classroom chick hatching teaches children that animals are disposable. It also leaves out important lessons: Chickens are living, feeling individuals worthy of respect and kindness.

This wonderful children’s book tells the touching story of a little girl named Melanie, a hen named Henny, and the bond they develop after Henny is saved from a classroom chick-hatching project. The story shows the sweetness of hens and why hatching projects should be replaced with humane teaching about birds.

Last May, (2024) we were asked to take in some chicks from a local school. Thirty-one chicks hatched in their classrooms. They came to us just a few days old. The chicks were part of a life cycle study for elementary students.
Every spring, thousands of fertile eggs are shipped to classroooms across the country to be mechanically incubated, studied and discarded.
Our humane version of this project replaces the need to find homes for live baby animals.
The Hatching Kindness Project also allows classrooms to take a peek at "their flocks" any time via our live web cam: "ChickenTV", where natural chicken behavior can be observed.
